Art Deco History
Art Deco as a form of furniture and decoration began at the turn of teh 1900s in Paris with the 'Societe des artistes decorateurs' founded after the wonderful the Universal Exposition of 1900.The Art DEco movement really came to the for in the 1920s and 30s as Modernisme took hold and featured prominently at the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Art in Paris in 1925.
Art deco represented and reflected the developing industrial/technological vision of Europe and the USA after WW1 - its clean lines and supra modern designs looking to a future featured heavily in Fritz Langs wonderful and groundbreaking film 'Metropolis'. It followed on from Art Nouveau, expanding on its design palette and making use of new manufacturing tecniques to integrate woods and metals as well as the 'intarsia' inlays hat swedish art deco is so well known for.
